{The Ordinary Moments} #6 - I Have The Best Of Friends

09:53

At 23 I'm not classed as a 'young mum', but yet I only know a handful of other mums and I'm the first of my group of girls to have a baby. Most of my friends are either just starting up careers or are making plans to travel, and I'm at home with a baby. Our lives are now very different. One of the things I worried about a lot when I was pregnant was how I would maintain friendships once my baby arrived. I feared that I would find it hard to stay in touch with everyone, or that people would get bored of me as I wouldn't be able to get out and about as much as before.

But I couldn't have been more wrong. My friends have been so supportive and they all absolutely love Zach. It makes me so happy that they make the effort to travel to where we live to spend time with us so often. And when they are organising events they take us into consideration, and often make baby friendly plans. I love watching them play with Zach, chatting to him in silly voices and arguing over who is going to hold him next.

So this weekend when my friend Sara hosted a BBQ we took Zach along with us. The sun decided to hide away but we braved the cold, and sat outside snuggled up in blankets determined to have a lovely time despite the weather. Of course there was enough food to feed an army. We had all decided to make a salad or two, along with the usual sausages and burgers. Food. Heaven.

Zach had a great time being fussed over by the girls. Watching him with other people is one of my favourite things as I love to watch how he interacts. He's finally got the hang of smiling which is just the cutest, as before he always looked so serious! They cuddled him, and fed him and then we even took him to meet Sara's bunny rabbit George. I was interested to see what his reaction would be as so far he's had very limited contact with animals. He held out his hand for George who came and gave it a good sniff. So so so cute!

After the food we headed indoors to the warmth for dessert, celebrity pointless and board games. I am a massive board game fan, so this was right up my street. We played articulate, boys vs girls, and I got way too competitive. As it got later though it started to get a bit much for Zach. We used to be able to stay out with him at our friends houses where he would happily sleep in our arms or in his car seat, but now he's a little older and sleeping through the night he wants to be in his own bed. As soon as we got him home and into his sleeping bag he was fast asleep.

We've learnt that when you have a baby the game is always changing. We may no longer be able to stay out at our friends houses, but because he's sleeping so well at night he's awake and alert for a lot longer in the day so we can start to do more things with him than before. And I'm sure that no matter what we'll still be able to do things with our friends, because honestly, they're just the best.

    1. It's such a weird position to be in - it's like baby limbo. Older than a young mum but still younger than the majority! xx
