Ickworth

We have finally gone and got ourselves National Trust memberships - does this officially make us adults now? It's something we've been meaning to do for a while now as we love going on days out, and as Zach is getting a little older now and loves going to new places we thought that it was the right time. When you sign up you get a handbook telling you about all of the National Trust sites, and we have decided to get around as many of them as we can!

This weekend the weather was gorgeous and we decided to head to Ickworth House for the day for a family day out. We took a (vegan!) picnic and met up with Zach's grandparents as well as his great aunt and uncle for a walk around the house and grounds. The first thing you see when you walk up the path towards the house is the beautiful rotunda which stands right in the centre. I would love to live in a house so grand, and have opulent parties and great picnics on the lawns.

We first explored the servants quarters which were in the basement and it was really interesting to see how they lived. It seems there was as much hierarchy in the lower quarters as there was upstairs! We then headed to the rest of the house where we were able to see the beautiful rooms where guests would have been entertained. I loved it, although it would be great to be able to redecorate a house like that to see what it would look like with a more modern twist! I would take down all of the portraits first!

The grounds at Ickworth are huge, and we walked through the Italianate garden and stumpery and then down to the church and the walled gardens. Within the walled gardens is a field of wild flowers which was breathtaking - the photos I took just don't do it justice! Finally we headed back up to the front of the building where we took some family photos in front of the stunning rotunda before heading home!

Ickworth is located just outside Bury St Edmunds, and if you live in the area or are able to get there I would definitely recommend a trip! We had a lovely day, and will definitely be heading back there in the future when Zach is a little older. I will leave you with some of the photos I took:
