week 3

We've reached the end of the third week of Vegan August which means there isn't long left to go! This week we tried some new recipes, went out for meals and ate about 254738 tubs of houmous! I think we've tried every flavour of houmous there is, and now as qualified houmous experts we would recommend sundried tomato houmous! Delicious!

On Saturday Jono went out to a stag do and managed to stay vegan for the entire time, including two meals out and a stop at a kebab shop! We have both been for a curry this week and have found that it is really easy to eat Indian food as a vegan. We had vegetable curries which were cooked without butter as well as rice, bombay potatoes and poppadoms. The only thing we couldn't have were naan breads, which I have to admit I did really miss!

I also headed to Nandos for lunch with a friend, which is somewhere surprisingly easy to eat as a vegan! I did my research before I went so I knew what I could and couldn't eat, and found this video to be really helpful. I think that going to other restaurants may prove a lot harder though, especially if you don't look at the menu in advance.

I also want to add that we're actually still missing eating meat and dairy. I thought that by now we wouldn't mind not having them, but actually I'm counting down the days until I can have some chicken fajitas again! Whilst being a vegan is easier than I thought it would be, I don't think we'll be sticking to it after August ends. Our current plan is to be meat free Monday-Friday (with a miz of vegan and vegetarian meals) and then have good quality free range meat at the weekends. It's all about getting that balance!

Our meals from week 3:

Saturday: jam sandwiches!
Sunday: vegetable curry, rice & bombay potatoes at an Indian restaurant
Monday: roasted cauliflower and chickpea tacos
Tuesday: mushroom stir fry
Wednesday: ratatouille pie with parsnip mash
Thursday: picnic bits (houmous, pitta bread, etc)
Friday: gnocchi with sundried tomato pesto

Next week will be the final week of Vegan August, so come back to see if we make it until the very end! We're headed to a BBQ where I don't think we'll be able to eat much so that might be a bit of a challenge!
