Working Mum

It's now been four months since I returned to work after maternity leave, and I have to say it was definitely the right decision. I remember being so worried about leaving Zach, but thankfully I am able to work part time, and we have found a balance that works for us. I thought I would share the 5 things which from my experience have made being a working mum awesome:

Independence for you:
After spending a solid 9 months at home with Zach I found the return to work rather liberating. It's not that I didn't enjoy spending that time with my baby, but I craved having some time where no one was dependent on me. It gives me a chance to recharge my batteries, do something for myself, and have a change of scenery. This also means that time time Zach and I spend together now is far more special, and I like to make the most of every second we have together before I go back to work again.

Independence for your baby:
Not only has the time apart been good for me, but it has meant that Zach has gotten used to spending time away from both Jono and I. It is really important to me that he feels comfortable without his parents, and thankfully he is a very social and independent little boy. Whilst he is currently looked after by family I feel that this time apart will ultimately help when he has to go to nursery, and then school, in the future.

Adult conversation:
I am probably (definitely) the chattiest person in my office. I am revelling in being able to talk about things that are not baby related with proper adults for the WHOLE day! Of course I often find myself talking about Zach (and getting out my phone to show everyone photos of my darling boy), but it's nice to be able talk about other things too.

Some 'me' time:
For me this came with my lunch break. It is one hour where I can do what I want. Apart from the occasional errands I have nothing that I 'should' be doing. Recently I have been spending my free time reading which is something I didn't often find time for before. (And I get to drink my tea whilst it's still hot and not have to share my lunch with anyone!)

Increased income:
This one is probably my favourite perk because it means we can afford to do more fun things together as a family. Living off maternity pay is hard, and the past year has seen us unable to go on holiday or even as many days out as we had hoped. We plan to go on a few short breaks over the course of 2016 and I feel giddy with excitement just thinking about it!
