{The Ordinary Moments 2016} #2 - First Steps

10:04

Who knew that the first week of routine after the gloriously unstructured Christmas break could be so exciting? I certainly didn't have high expectations. I was dreading the early mornings and the busy commute to work. Although I love my job, I longed to stay home with my boy just a little longer. But it turned out that Zach was about to make this week more wonderful than I could have imagined.

Ever since he was tiny people have remarked on how strong Zach is. He's so active, as soon as he could move he was off - getting him to sit still is a miracle. He is always on the go. He was an early crawler, and was pulling himself up pretty early too. We were so confident that by Christmas he would be walking. But, the holiday season came and went and our boy showed no interest in standing up let alone walking. Why would he want to slowly toddle around when he can crawl so quickly?

So imagine our surprise when one weekday evening, when we thought we would see if he wanted to try walking, he did! Jono and I sat just a few feet apart, encouraged him to have a go, and our sweet boy took his very first steps. He wobbled his way from one of us to the other, and back again, collapsing into a fit of giggles each time he reached our arms. He loved every second, and we could see how happy it made him. I cried tears of pride, and I knew that we were losing those last few scraps of baby.

And over the course of the week he's gotten stronger. Each day taking more steps, walking further and standing unaided. It is so wonderful to watch his confidence growing. To see him gaining more independence and growing into a little boy right in front of our eyes. But, as with all developments, it is bittersweet. Because it means letting go of the baby we've known this past year. And, with no plans to have another, the end of being parents to a baby forever. It's come around far sooner than I imagined.
