What My Toddler Eats - 15 Months Old

Monday, May 09, 2016

I love reading posts like these, so I thought I would write my own and share what my toddler eats. Zach is not a particularly fussy eater, and will usually try everything I serve him, although there is no guarantee that it will end up in his mouth rather than on the floor. We've worked really hard over the past few months to get to the position we are in as back in January he was refusing most things we offered him. We try to give him a mix of things at each meal - some we know he likes and others he either has never tried or doesn't usually like.

What he eats does vary during the week as he spends two days with my mum who feeds him differently to how we do. We encourage him to feed himself, use his own cutlery and pick food up where appropriate (and often when it's not) whereas she feeds him everything herself.

Other things to note are that we serve him the same food that we eat, we eat most meals together at the table and if he doesn't eat his food we don't usually offer him something else as he still has a big bottle each night so we know he won't go hungry. I tend to give big portions because sometimes Zach is really hungry and will eat loads!

Breakfast

With my mum Zach usually has porridge so to mix it up we usually feed him some combination of toast and fruit. It is simple, and we know he will eat it, which is a good way to start the day. Sometimes I will make three slices of toast with a different topping on each, and then give him a strip of each (eating the rest myself!) so that he can try a variety of flavours.

His favourite is Nutella (no surprise there) but also likes peanut butter, jam, marmite, cheese spread or just plain butter. His would eat blueberries for every meal of every day if he could, but he eats most types of fruit so we try to vary what we give him.

Lunch

Usually we like to serve what I call a 'picky lunch' when we're at home, which is usually whatever we're having and anything we can find in the fridge/cupboards. Often there is a mix of things he likes and things he doesn't and I've noticed that over time he starts eating things he used to refuse. Pasta is a big no-no in almost any form, so I try to sneak that in a lot to try and get him to eat it but this has so far been unsuccessful!

Sometimes when our cupboards are bare we cook from the freezer for lunch, which usually means fish fingers, chips and peas. This is Zach's favourite meal - he is all about dem peas!

Dinner

We serve Zach whatever we're having for dinner, and we usually try to cram lots of veggies in. He loooooves grains - rice, cous cous & quinoa are guaranteed to be eaten, so these feature quite often although we do try to mix things up and keep him trying new things. He loves his food to have a lot of flavour so is a huge fan of curry!

So that's what my toddler eats! Overall I'm really happy with how weaning has gone with Zach, mainly due to the huge progress he's made since January when I wanted to tear my hair out at every meal. I hope that with time he will be even less of a picky eater, although I know toddlers are pretty unpredictable. Our next goal is to stop him throwing food on the floor (you should see out beige carpets!) so if you have any tips please let me know in the comments below!

  1. This is such a great post. I love things like this, it inspires me. Your idea for trying out different spreads in the morning is great. We are so same same, beleive it or not Baby Girl's go to (and mine) is just plain butter. I've said it before, and I'll say it again. Your table wear is amazeballs! Thanks so much for linking up to #MinisMeals x

    1. Thank you, and glad you like my table wear too - feel like I'm winning on that front, even if I can't get my son to eat pasta! xx

  2. I gave up giving chloe new food. Everything she has in front of her ends up on the floor. And it's pointless giving her a plate. She tops it over and it lands everywhere. She's an angel in nursery of course.
She would probably try out more if I would be able to cook better
