Picture Books for Winter07:30
Now that the weather has turned colder, and the trees are starting to look bare, I thought it was time to swap over the books in Zach's bedroom from his Autumn collection to his Winter ones. I love seeing them on his wall, and it makes it so easy to grab them at bed time. We've recently taken the sides off Zach's bed so more often than not I find myself grabbing a few and cuddling up with him to read them. Here are our favourite picture books for Winter:
The Very Smiley Snowman - we have quite a few books by Jack Tickle (I have to wonder if that is his real name!), and this is the latest one we've added to our collection. Each double page spread opens with a big pop-up festive character, which makes a really fun change from usual books. I do have to make sure Zach is careful with them though as they are easy to rip.
Winter - the first of two with the same name, this is the smaller book, and it is very simple and perfect for babies and young toddlers. With just one picture on each page it is perfect for encouraging Zach with his speech, and teaching him about different things to do this time of year.
Winter - this book is so lovely, and we actually have all of the books in this series, one for each season. It starts by saying "I know it's winter when..." and goes on to describe lots of winter based activities, such as playing in the snow, and putting seeds out for the hungry birds. It is beautifully illustrated, and I love reading it to Zach.
That's not my Snowman... - I honestly don't think I could share a collection of books and there not be one from the 'that's not my... range' included. Zach absolutely loves reading this one, and we tend to go through it twice - once to touch each of the touchy-feely sections, and then again to find the mouse on each page.
Stick Man - we are big fans of Julia Donaldson books, and this one is definitely up there with our favourites. I love the way that her stories are written in rhyme, as it makes them such a delight to read. The story follows Stick Man who finds himself in a world of danger, until he eventually makes it back home to his family.
The Polar Bear and the Snow Cloud - this book follows a lonely polar bear who longs for a friend to play with - it is very simple story, but very sweet, and the illustrations are super cute. Zach loves to point at the "rain" (snow), and I think as he get's older it will be a great one to help teach him about different types of winter weather.
That's not my Penguin... - another one from the 'That's not my...' series, this one is a favourite right now because Zach absolutely loves penguins at the moment.
Elmer in the Snow - we have the original Elmer book, and Zach really enjoys reading it, so when I spotted this I had to get it for him. This is quite an old version, that I picked up second hand, but I believe there is a newer one now available. In the story Elmer takes his elephant friends up the mountain to experience snow, before they all decided to head back as they realise the prefer the warmer weather after all.
The Gruffalo's Child - we love the Gruffalo, so I just had to get this one for Zach too. Just as beautifully written and illustrated as the original, this tale follows the Gruffalo's child as she ventures out into the snow, sure that the 'Big Bad Mouse' isn't real.
